On Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came to the disciples, there appeared to be cloven tongues of flame resting on each of them. Those flames were the visible sign of the descent of the Spriit to the apostels, and the flame has been the symbol of that descent ever since. The Red Hot Pokers used today represent the seven tongues and the coal is the added meaning to the fame. Arrangement by Gelene Amos

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

The Lord’s Supper is at the center, or heart, of our worship life. We place such great importance on this celebration for the following reasons:

· We do it in remembrance of Christ and His life on earth

· We are drawn closer together in fellowship as a congregation

· We are giving thanks for forgiveness of sins and renewal of life

· We do it to rededicate ourselves in Christ’s way

The chalice symbolizes the central place of communion in worship for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The X-shaped cross of the disciple Andrew is a reminder of the ministry of each person and the importance of evangelism.
